Wetland & Waterway Fencing

If you farm or manage land near a stream, wetland, or bush block in the Franklin district, the right fencing isn’t just good practice; in many cases, it’s a legal requirement. At Fencemen, we specialise in wetland and waterway fencing across South Auckland and North Waikato, helping landowners protect waterways, restore native habitat, and meet their obligations under the Resource Management Act and freshwater regulations.

We understand the terrain, the regulations, and what works long-term on NZ rural properties. Whether you’re fencing off a small stream on a lifestyle block or protecting several kilometres of waterway on a working farm, we’ll give you straight advice and a solution built to last.

Why fence off waterways?

Stock access to streams and wetlands causes significant environmental damage, bank erosion, sediment runoff, and water quality issues that affect your land and your neighbours’ downstream. Beyond the environmental impact, councils across the Auckland and Waikato regions are increasingly enforcing setback requirements that require exclusion fencing along waterways.

Fencing off a waterway also lets native vegetation recover naturally, which stabilises banks, improves water quality, and can increase the value and productivity of your land over time.

What we build

Every waterway is different;  the terrain, the stock type, the setback distance, and the planting plan all affect what type of fence works best. We assess your site and recommend the right solution. Typical builds include:

  • Post, wire and batten exclusion fencing:  the most common approach for stream and wetland setbacks on farms and lifestyle blocks
  • Electric fencing:  cost-effective for longer runs where a farm is only running dairy cows.
  • Wire and batten fencing:  the most preferred option.
  • Access gates and race infrastructure:  keeping stock out without making your property harder to manage
  • Riparian planting protection:  fencing designed to allow native planting to establish without stock damage

We work with treated timber posts and high-tensile wire suited to NZ conditions, including the wet ground and variable terrain common in the Franklin and North Waikato areas.

Regulations and setbacks — what you need to know

The National Policy Statement for Freshwater Management (NPS-FM) and Auckland Council’s Unitary Plan both set requirements for stock exclusion from waterways. In most cases, you’ll need to fence a minimum setback distance from the edge of a stream or wetland, this varies depending on the waterway type and whether the land is flat or sloped.

We’re not resource consent specialists, but we know the local requirements well and can help you understand what’s likely expected on your property. We’ll always recommend you check with Auckland Council or your local environmental officer if you’re unsure about your specific obligations.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to fence off my stream?

In many cases, yes. Auckland Council’s Unitary Plan requires stock exclusion from streams and wetlands on most rural land. The NPS-FM has also strengthened these requirements nationally. The setback distance depends on your land type and the waterway. We’d recommend checking with your council, but in our experience most Franklin farmers will need some form of exclusion fencing.

How much does waterway fencing cost?

It depends on the length of the run, terrain, and fence type. Post and wire fencing is generally the most affordable option. We provide free, no-obligation quotes. Get in touch, and we’ll organise a site visit and give you a clear price.

Are there any funding or grants available?

Yes; there are several funding options available through Auckland Council’s Weed and Pest Management programme and through the Ministry for the Environment’s Jobs for Nature initiatives (check current availability). Some rural support organisations also offer cost-share schemes for waterway fencing. We can point you in the right direction when we visit your property.

How long does the fencing take?

Totally depends on the size of the job. We’ll give you a realistic timeline when we quote.
